For the past three months I have lived in isolation. I live alone and have had minimal contact with my neighbors, and no trips to the store or anywhere else as the world has shut down in response to the Coronavirus. Normally this would not bother me as I am a simple person who enjoys his own company but living in what amounts to involuntary confinement has taken a toll on my mental health.
As a way of keeping my sanity, I started combing through my music collection looking for a song to serve as an anthem to my isolation. I came across a song sang by Eric Heatherly called “Flowers on The Wall,” which was absolutely perfect. It’s a cover of an old Statler Brothers tune, that just hits all the notes for how I’m feeling.
One of the lines in particular, “smoking cigarettes and watching captain Kangaroo,” hit close to home as while I don’t’ smoke, there were many days I had a cold drink in my hand and a classic TV show on the big screen.
If this song seems familiar, the original Statler Brothers song was featured in Pulp Fiction, and has been used in many other TV shows as background.
So please enjoy this song as I have been for the past few months. It’s a catchy ditty, and as it says “Don’t’ tell me, I’ve nothing to do.”
